This 1969 Porsche 912 was acquired by Kurt Zimmerman in 1980 and developed over the next three decades into a unique, competition-focused Porsche. Zimmerman's career included positions with Porsche dealerships in Southern California before joining John von Neumann Porsche-Audi in Los Angeles, where he worked alongside Richie Ginther. Inspired by Ginther's 1971 911 S/T and the preparation philosophies that shaped his approach, Zimmerman set out to build a lightweight Porsche of his own using genuine factory components from multiple generations of Porsche competition cars.
An exceptionally original, rust-free 1969 Porsche 912 finished in Polo Red, with portions of its original paint still preserved to this day, served as the foundation for the project. Rather than replicating Ginther's 911 S/T outright, the car evolved over approximately thirty years as Zimmerman's ideas and engineering continued to develop. Genuine Porsche factory competition components from multiple generations of Porsche Motorsport were carefully selected and incorporated throughout the build, including factory 906 forged rocker arms and aluminum timing sprockets, 911R lightweight body panels produced from factory molds, factory RSR twin-plug ignition and slide-valve induction components, a 935 front oil tank and chassis cross-bracing system, factory 930 braking components, and 962 titanium engine hardware, among countless other details. Each component was selected with a specific engineering objective in mind, from reducing weight and improving cooling to increasing strength and optimizing weight distribution. The result is a remarkably cohesive and thoughtfully engineered automobile.
Power comes from an Andial-built 3.5-liter twin-plug flat-six featuring slide-valve induction and producing more than 300 horsepower. Extensive use of aluminum, magnesium, titanium, fiberglass, and other lightweight materials contributes to an approximate curb weight of just 1,815 pounds, creating an exceptionally responsive driver's car unlike virtually any other early Porsche.
Accompanying the car is a comprehensive history file containing decades of invoices, engineering notes, build specifications, period documentation, and supporting records chronicling its development. The combination of genuine Porsche factory competition components, meticulous engineering, and extensive documentation makes this an exceptional opportunity for the discerning collector seeking a truly unique early Porsche.
