Manufactured for just two years, the 356B Super 90 GT Coupe is among the rarest pushrod-powered variants Porsche ever built—sharing the Carrera GT’s lightweight construction but powered by the high-performance “Super 90” engine. Chassis 110856 is one of approximately 14 factory-built GT coupes and the only known example finished in Condor Yellow (6010). It was completed on April 19, 1960 and delivered that June to J.W. Bootz of Doetinchem, Holland via Pon’s Automobielhandel, Porsche’s first official importer outside Germany.
As Road & Track put it in their 1961 road test, the Super 90 GT was “a Super 90 made extra super for competition purposes.” From the factory, 110856 was configured with the full GT treatment: aluminum doors, hood, and decklid; plexiglass side windows with leather pull straps; 60mm alloy drum brakes; a roll bar; and an 80-liter long-range fuel tank. Additional equipment included a dimmable interior mirror and headlight stone guards—both confirmed on the Kardex and Certificate of Authenticity.
110856 was reportedly raced in-period and is believed to be the same car driven by Sam Price of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, who campaigned a bright yellow Super 90 in the 1963 and 1964 Pennsylvania Hillclimb Championship. An article from August 1963 refers to Price’s car as the “2000 lb. canary” and records a time of 62.749 seconds at Springtown Hill—alongside a striking photo of the car catching air over a crest. Original footage from the Hershey Hill Climbs in 1963 and 1964, published by the Antique Automobile Club of America’s Library and Research Center, shows the car in competition in its Condor Yellow livery. The car remained active in vintage racing decades later, with logbooks documenting entries at Summit Point, Watkins Glen, Lime Rock, and West Palm Beach between 1988 and 1990. During this period, it was finished in silver and driven by both John Biggs and Weldon Scrogham before being restored.
The restoration was undertaken by Weldon and Cole Scrogham, who discovered traces of the original Condor Yellow beneath the silver finish. The car was returned to its original color configuration, while retaining key GT features including the bucket seats, louvered rear decklid with integrated cold-air boxes, and Reutter coachwork badging. Matching “856” stampings—corresponding to the last three digits of the chassis number—are present on the front trunk lid, rear decklid, and airboxes.
Power comes from a replacement 616/7 Super 90 engine upgraded to 1,720cc built by Jack Staggs, paired with a GT-ratio four-speed gearbox assembled by Tony Smetona. Key lightweight and competition details remain intact, including leather window pull straps, 15-inch silver wheels with 1960–61 date codes, and correct Carrera-style braking and suspension equipment. The car is currently fitted with recently installed Avon Radial 175/75R15 tires, all with late 2022 date codes.
During current ownership, 110856 has received regular attention and mechanical upkeep, with recent work performed by TLG Auto in North Hollywood, CA. Service in 2024 included a valve adjustment, oil service, carburetor tuning, new spark plugs, fuel and oil filters, brake adjustment, chassis lubrication, and installation of a rebuilt starter and new battery. The muffler was also replaced, and additional service included a new clutch cable and a rebuilt tachometer by North Hollywood Speedometer. Receipts totaling over $7,200 accompany the car.
Chassis 110856 earned Best in Class at the 1993 Porsche Parade in Cincinnati and was both featured and pictured on the cover of Cole Scrogham’s book Porsche 356 Carrera (1996). Its FIA Historic Technical Passport, valid through 2027, was issued following competition prep by Tuthill Porsche in the UK.
The car is offered with copies of its Porsche Kardex, Certificate of Authenticity, original sales and delivery paperwork, vintage racing logbook, tool kit, jack, and documentation supporting decades of specialist care. This is truly a rare, competition-configured Super 90 GT with factory provenance, period racing pedigree, and extensive supporting documentation.
